The United States has the Statue of Liberty, Italy has the Colosseum and India has the Taj Mahal, but when we think of the UK it can be difficult to name a tourist attraction of this calibre. While its offerings may be subtler than the 110ft tall bronze Buddha that China proudly displays, this tends to be the name of the game in the United Kingdom and if you look closely there are more exciting tourist attractions than you might think. Take, for instance, the Giant's Causeway in Ireland. What makes this tourist attraction so special is the fact that some forty thousand hexagonal basal stones were formed entirely naturally, tens of millions of years ago during volcanic activity. Not only is it rich in fascinating legends but it's rich in awe-inspiring paleogenic history too. In a similar strain is Salisbury's Stone Henge, an ancient monument and phenomenon because even to this day nobody can be sure of how the stones were erected all those years ago. Pagans visit Stone Henge each year during the Summer Solstice (longest day) and this is the only time the stones are open to the public. If you're looking for ways to entertain the kids then there may not be a Disneyland in the United Kingdom but there are the many theme parks: Alton Towers, Legoland and Chessington in England, Scotland's Theme Park and Oakwood in Wales. For more UK tourist attractions it's worth taking a trip to Brighton beach or Blackpool to see what the UK coast is all about too. |
