| Niagara Falls is and has been an important vacation destination for years. Many young people hear about it from their parents or other similarly aged people who visited on a honeymoon. The huge number of pictures, drawings and books results in millions of people recognizing the location and name. One fact not immediately obvious to most is that the immense volume flowing over the Falls is the result of the other four great lakes coming together at one point. The very large surface area of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Erie contributes to this flow. The depth of the lakes varies from around 60 feet for Erie to over 600 for Superior. There are many many sights to see at Niagara. The Falls themselves appeal to the senses at several levels. The first thing so many people notice is the deafening roar. Close-up where the view is best there's no talking over the roar. Try to imagine yourself deep in the forest and stalking game for supper. A noise like you've never heard before grabs your attention, so you move towards it. To become an additional person who actually hears and sees the thunder and mists is amazing. Much more recently several changes have made it more attractive to tourists. The gardens created on the Canadian side are exceptional. The riverboat trips just below the Falls are close enough to excite everyone on board. Another show that attracts thousands nearly every night is the light show projected onto the falls and other water elements nearby. Several other places provide unusual views of either the American Falls or the Canadian Falls. On the Canadian side there is an elevator down to passageways in the rock behind the Falls. There are also walk ways very near to the falls. Tours include use of heavy duty rain gear to remain dry and guides with information about the sights. An Aero Car on cables provides another perspective. It runs at a height varying from 150 feet to 250 feet above the river with a terrific view of the Falls. It was originally open in 1916 and most recently upgraded in 1984. The primary feature in its field of view is the giant whirlpool. The precise amount of water flowing over the Falls depends on several factors. While the volume is large due to the source being four other great lakes, the level of Lake Erie has direct effect on volume. Seasonal changes to all lake levels are important. Finally, the two different lake levels provide very suitable conditions for hydro-power for the United States and Canada. |
